Australian Horse Racing
The Edge
We all want to be competitive in everything we do. And no more so that with punting on horse racing.
Success in punting on horses, in fact most things reduces down to an information war - the people with the best information make the smart moves.
Books have been and still are the best source of general information, and this applies at least as much in the art of racehorse selection and staking as in any other field.
Author Paul Segar has produced textbooks which cover all aspects of punting. The books alone stand as a complete reference but also provide 'food for thought'. You can develop / improve your own ideas as well as learn some new techniques.
Each book is written in plain English with plenty of practical examples in each chapter. Browse the contents of each book or email for further information, if required.

ABC Punting (Almost Black Caviar Punting)
By Paul Segar
Punting as everybody knows is a difficult hobby at the best of times. And there are many different ways to approach it. This little article looks at a plan which should be useful for many punters focusing on improving their bottom line.
Every single day you can apply a variety of bets in an almost endless supply of races. You can go for long shots, trifectas, take the favourite or a combination of anything…or everything.
One tried and true approach is the simple win bet. Which horse to take is as always the difficulty and of course which race will be the best for you. No help in either of these areas but more a way of approaching your betting.
There are very few things in life that are certain, as they say, death, taxes…and Black Caviar. So what is being suggested here is only take the wagers that are clear cut and certain. Well we only have our three certainties and as this article is written, Black Caviar is unbeaten and hopefully she remains that way (otherwise we would lose one of Australia’s greatest unbeaten legends and this article would also need some adjusting…).
There is only one Black Caviar and although
some horses can string together a few wins, more horses usually win one
in a row and that’s about it.
So the type of bet to take is like betting on Black Caviar, that is taking
a certain bet. Life would be great if this type of wager could be found
on a daily or weekly basis. Everyone could live off the profits. Sadly
there are few other certainties – but as they say there are races
and there are races.

The type of horse to bet on is the one that has the race won and only really bad luck can beat it. There is usually one of these running at most meetings. Short in price is often de rigueur but not always.
Emphasis: focus on the quality. Look for the bets like you were betting on Black Caviar.
OK, there is only one Black Caviar. So the idea is to bet on horses that will run almost like the great mare, that is Almost (like) Black Caviar or ABC punting. Take those bets that you think are almost certain to win, that is they are almost like betting on the mighty champion. If the bet doesn’t match up to this criteria, don’t take it.
It’s amazing how one simple rule can a) reduce your number of bets and b) limit bets to only top wagers.
Keep a list of your ABC wagers and compare them with all your other bets. See if this approach helps your bottom line.
So, the next time you prepare for taking a wager, think ABC punting.
