The Edge
We all want to be competitive in everything we do. And no more so that with punting on horse racing.
Success in punting on horses, in fact most things reduces down to an information war - the people with the best information make the smart moves.
Books have been and still are the best source of general information, and this applies at least as much in the art of racehorse selection and staking as in any other field.
Author Paul Segar has produced textbooks which cover all aspects of punting. The books alone stand as a complete reference but also provide 'food for thought'. You can develop / improve your own ideas as well as learn some new techniques.
Each book is written in plain English with plenty of practical examples in each chapter. Browse the contents of each book or email for further information, if required.

Happy New Year

Well not quite but August 1 is the start of the new racing season.
So Happy New Year! All the horses compared to August 1 last year are a year older. And so are we.
Horse racing. It's a great sport you can watch. The spectacle of the horses thundering down the turf, fighting out every finish. The horses, jockeys, trainer. The drama. The majesty.
You can even bet on it.
Betting on horse racing is something at times that no rational person would do. There are many other irrational things at times we can also do.
As the late race caller, Bill Collins quipped, “Off comes the head and on goes a pumpkin” when talking about having a punt on the four legged steeds.
There will always be the punt. Whether you play or not in this new season is up to you.
To usher in the new season, here are some jokes and some comical and more serious New Racing Year's resolutions for the new 2024-25 racing season.
New Year's Resolutions
Get in shape like the jockeys. Maybe some agility will rub off on your betting.

Communicate at the stables with more horses. Who knows, they might give you more than hay.
Only bet wearing your lucky socks. If they start losing, maybe wash them. Lucky hat?Horse whispering lessons, Find the horse feeling confident on the day.
Develop a system. Use the most extreme racehorse names.
Start each day with a motivational speech. Om Mani Padme Horse followed by 10 push ups, 10 sit ups and a nap.
Only bet on horses endorsed by social media celebrities. No Endorsements, endorse your own.
Find a small, lucky mascot to hold while betting. No win, no mascot.
Drink a glass of water before each bet. Better yet, drink two.
Create a betting ritual. Something like hopping on one foot, eating a ripe tomato or facing your fave horse picture before placing a bet.
Why did the gambler bring a ladder to the racetrack? He wanted to get on a higher level of betting.
How do you know a horse is a good bet? When he has a lot of stable relationships.
Why don't horses use smart phones? They prefer stable connections.
Why was the horse so happy? Because he lived in a stable environment.
Why did the horse take up basketball? A slam dunk was his only certainty.
Why did the horse jump the road? He was getting too old to jump hurdles.
How do you make a small fortune betting on horses?Start with a large fortune.
Why was the horse such a bad dancer? He had two left hooves.

From the More Serious Pundit
No More Gut Feelings: This year, no more "lucky hunches". Strictly data and statistics.
Master the Form Guide: I resolve to read the form guide, not just glance at the horse names and pick the coolest name.
Early to Bed, Early to Bet: No more last-minute bets made under the influence of sleep deprivation or celebratory beverages. Well only one more. Happy New Year!
Stick to a Budget: This year, I'll treat my betting budget like a strict diet plan. No more overindulging.
Learn from Loses: I'll keep a detailed journal of every bet and learn from my mistakes instead of just cursing my bad luck.
Form Reversal?

Tom and Larry go see a movie that features a horse race.
Tom turns to Larry and says, "I'll bet you $20 the white horse wins."
Larry responds, "No way. I'll take that bet any day."
Unfortunately for Larry, the white horse won.
After the movie, Tom says, "You don't have to pay me. I've already seen this movie, and now I feel bad about making the bet."
Larry, looking very confused, replies, "Well, so had I, but I didn't think he could do it again."
Good luck and happy punting in the new season.
